Kumana National Park Travel Guide

The Kumana park , also referred to as Yala East park is found within the Ampara district of south-east of Sri Lanka at a distance of 391 kilometers from Colombo. Its a best wild life park in Sri Lanka and holds its own as a aviary at an equivalent nonce home to a number of the larger mammals found in Yala west park. Highlights of Kumana is that the large estuary fed by “Kumbukkan Oya” and most of the bird that nest at Kumana use this mangrove swamp during May – June to raise their young. Pelican is the most common while the rarest bird spotted here is black necked stork.

Best Season to visit Kumana National Park

  • From April to July. tens of thousands of birds migrate to the Kumana swamp area.

Climate of Kumana National Park

  • Spring (March through May)
    Humidity and temperatures combine to make this season feel very warm. Highs range from 95.6°F (35.3°C) and 87.8°F (31°C) with warmer temperatures in the later months. Rain is rare with 2 to 5 days of significant precipitation per month. Spring is the slowest for tourism, which makes it a good time for those looking for deals.
  • Summer (June through August)
    The middle-year months have hot weather with high temperatures that are quite warm. These months see the least precipitation with 1 to 3 days of precipitation per month. June – August is fairly slow season for tourism in Kumana National Park, so lodging and other accommodations may cost slightly less.
  • Fall (September through November)
    Fall daily highs range from 93.7°F (34.3°C) and 86.2°F (30.1°C), which will feel very nice given the humidity and wind. It rains or snows a significant amount: 3 to 12 days per month. Tourism is the second busiest during these months due to the weather, so hotels may be slightly higher priced.

Kumana National Park is the most important and most popular bird sanctuary in Sri Lanka and records more than 430 bird species comprising endemic, resident and migrant birds. the bird watchers are ready to watch 200 species easily. The large number of birds varieties found within the numerous wildlife parks of Sri Lanka makes the tropical island for major bird watching destination within the world.

Kumana peruse is generally popular for its avifauna. The best season to investigate the migratory birds coming from overseas is January and February. The main attraction in viewing the local birds, is to witness the nesting season, at Kumana Villu teaming with nesting birds and their fledglings. There are two main nesting seasons are December – April and June –September. One can see the nests and therefore the eggs from a secure distance, without disturbing them.

The bird species migrate here in large flocks Asian Open bill, White-breasted Water hen, Lesser Whistling Glossy Ibis, Purple Heron, Great Egret, Indian Pond Heron, Weathercock, Purple Swamp hen, Duck Black-crowned night raven , Intermediate Egret, Egretta garzetta , Spot-billed Pelican, Indian Cormorant, Little Cormorant, Common Moorhen, and tiny Grebe are the bird species migrate here in large flocks.

Among the rare birds that migrate to the swamp include Yellow-footed Green Pigeon, Greater Racket-tailed Drongo, Malabar Trogon, Red-faced Malkoha, and Sirkeer Malkoha. Pacific plover , Greater Sand Plover, Lesser Sand Plover, Grey Plover, Arenaria interpres , Little Ringed Plover, Wood Sandpiper, Marsh Sandpiper, Common Redshank, Common Sandpiper, Calidris Ferruginea , small Stint, Common Snipe, and Pintail Snipe are the common wading birds (especially one with long legs) at the Park.
