How to Get to Langkawi

Langkawi International Airport (LGK) has direct flights from Kuala Lumpur (about 1 hour 15 minutes), Penang (around 40 minutes) and Singapore, operated by carriers including Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, Firefly, Batik Air and Scoot. If you would rather travel by sea, ferries run to Kuah Jetty from Kuala Perlis (about 1 hour 15 minutes) and Kuala Kedah (about 1 hour 45 minutes) on the Malaysian mainland. The direct Penang-Langkawi ferry route has been suspended since 2020, so travelers coming from Penang currently need to fly or connect via one of the mainland jetties. (Source: redBus Malaysia)

Practical Travel Tips for Langkawi

  • The main attractions – Cable Car, Sky Bridge, Oriental Village and Underwater World – are spread across different parts of the island, so renting a car or scooter makes it much easier to get around than relying on taxis alone.
  • Arrive early at the Cable Car and Sky Bridge to beat the queues and the midday heat, and to get the clearest views before clouds roll in.
  • Keep small Malaysian ringgit notes handy for ferry tickets, entrance fees and roadside stalls, since not every vendor accepts cards.
  • Langkawi has long been known for duty-free shopping, but Malaysia’s 2026 federal budget introduced new duties on tobacco products and capped the vehicle tax exemption, and a full restoration of duty-free status is still under government review. If duty-free shopping is a priority, confirm current rules and prices with retailers before you go. (Source: The Star)
